PRINCIPAL'S CORNER Updates - Week of May 21st

Commencement and Project Grad:
Mahalo to our faculty and volunteers for your good work as it certainly showed for a very successful graduation ceremony. Commencements serve as a good reminder as to why we are in education. It was especially gratifying to see a good number of our faculty including teachers from the east complex schools in attendance.

Project Grad was a very positive experience for the graduates! They were well fed, entertained and kept safe.....on a side note, just impressed at the amount of food these young men & women consume as they never seemed to get full! Really great to see parents and community individuals involved in supporting this all night event.

SLC Academies:
Reminder to the English, Math, Science and Social Studies (grades 11 & 12) teachers to provide your preference as to which Academy (HOPES or IDEAS) you would like to be a part of. Important that we continue supporting all staff in our Smaller Learning Communities as beginning SY 2012-13, about 65% of our staff will be involved with the HUI and Academies. For those that do not respond by this week, I will be making the assignments for them.

Reminder - Instructional changes for Wednesday, 5/23 and Thursday, 5/24:
Wednesday, May 23rd - student instruction will end at 2:20 p.m; and
Thursday, May 24th (last day for students/teachers) will be converted to a Wednesday schedule ending @1:40 p.m.

Donation:
Special thanks to the Kauai Association for Family and Community Education (FCE) for their generous donation to our Teen Parent Child Care Center program. As part of the National FCE Day of the Family "Books for Newborn", we received about 45 books. On behalf our Kapaa High, I shared that these resources will go a long way in supporting literacy appreciation no matter what age as learning has no boundaries.

PRINCIPALS FORUM- Week of May 14th

2012 Senior Awards Ceremony: Kudos to our Counselors, Joan, Emmi, and Doris for a very splendid awards ceremony recognizing deserving seniors. It's very special when we can take time to acknowledge our students' academic achievements as it is truly a testament to their hard work! Special thanks to Judy Kuloloia and her culinary students for providing the wonderful food and to the Interact club for purchasing a cake.

Graduation reminders:
  • Please ensure that Counselors and Registrar receive names of seniors who are not passing by the close of Wednesday. Critical that we provide identified students and their parents in a timely manner; and
  • Encouraging everyone to attend Friday's graduation ceremony so we can show that solidarity and support. I have already sent out invitations to our feeder schools within the East Complex as our elementary & middle school teachers and administrators should be part of the celebration....we need to honor our K-12 efforts.

Instructional day changes: Please note the changes for Wednesday, 5/23 and Thursday, 5/24. PCNC Nancy Borilez has done a terrific job informing parents/community and the bus companies have been notified. Please share with your students.
Wednesday, May 23rd will become a full day and instruction will end at 2:20 p.m; and
Thursday, May 24th (last day for students/teachers) will be converted to a Wednesday schedule ending @1:40 p.m.

Achieve 3000: Just wanted to keep everyone updated that the current Achieve 3000 contract expires Dec 31, 2012. Three years ago, this contract agreement was signed to support all public school students. Currently data shows that about 125,000 students enrolled but only 50,000 students using it at least 40 times/year. Kapaa High's data shows that 12 teachers are utilizing, mostly in grades 9 & 10 totaling near 180 students. Students range from 4 - 80 hours utilizing the program. It is my understanding that the new 3 year contract will be about $4.14 million/year based on the current student usage count. Should the student use count be higher the cost will certainly lessen. Please think about this as I need to make some decisions as to whether our school will participate as schools may be asked to kick in funds to support this contract if we choose to renew. Will speak more on this at Wednesday's staff meeting.

Weekly Calendar:

Tuesday, May 15th: Athletic Awards Ceremony @Gym 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday, May 16th : Faculty/Staff Meeting @Library 1:50 p.m.

Friday, May 18th: Graduation

Have a great week!

Subject Updates - Week of May 7th

Accreditation Mid-term Visitation Report: Received attached draft report from the visiting team chair. Report reflects our accomplishments to date and validates that we remain on course. Positive highlights speaks to the SLC HUI/Academy efforts, implementation of inclusion and co-teaching opportunities, implementing open Honors and open Advanced Placement classes, and our new bell schedule. Report does also states that more work is required in addressing that all classrooms & courses reflect standards based teaching/learning, that we continue our efforts to use data and research based techniques, and that we display student works and awards on a regular basis.

Great job everyone as it truly takes a village to educate a child and please note that I did assure Chair Jim Schlosser, Ed.D. to share with the Accreditation Board that Kapaa High remains vigilant in fulfilling the growth needs areas.

PLC Session - Teaching In Block Periods: Reminder that our next meeting addressing planing to teach in block periods will be on Wednesday, May 9th promptly at 1:50 p.m. in the library. Please utilize Monday's Dept/Cross Curriculum day to work with your peers in developing a draft that can be shared.

Student Support: As discussed, let's remain consistent and focused for the next few weeks of the school year. This means bell-to-bell standards-based instruction, being consistent in addressing school wide expectations such as school shirts, etc. Important we are all consistent.

Yearbooks - SY 2011-12: Starting on Tuesday, May 8th the yearbooks will be distributed to the Seniors. Important that we acknowledge the good work produced by the yearbook students and teacher Jackie Yoshi. Ms. Yoshi stepped in covering for Chanelle Quinones and the results speak for itself. Want to also say "arigato" to Chanelle as she made it a point to communicate with Ms. Yoshi throughout. We need your assistance in sharing this reminder that there are additional yearbooks for sale. Last school year the yearbook class incurred a deficit due to the amount of unsold yearbooks.
