Weekly Principal's Address 10-28-10

As we enter into the last week of October,  want to share my appreciation as most of the classrooms visited students were focused and on task .  In fact, a good number of them were able to share what they were learning, why they were learning, whether they were doing good work and how they could valid this.  The word walls and student products displayed helped provide relevance and understanding in validating student learning.   One reminder is that we need to tighten our focus on bell-to-bell instruction....students need to be focused from the beginning until the end of the period.  Administration will be continuing classroom observations during the course of this week as well.  Overall, very pleased and kudos for your good work!  

Hawaii State Assessment:  Reminder that our grade 10 students begin their first round of HSA testing this week.  Asking that Dept Heads work with their teachers and with other Dept. heads to strategize how to target students need areas per the data.  Will ask the VPs and Beth to also join me in speaking to this when we sit in with the various Dept. mtgs on Monday.   Dept. Heads may also use this Wednesday's time as I am not planning to call mtgs this week.

Vice Principal/Athletic Directors' mtg:   The next Kauai Complex Area VP and AD  mtg is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 26th @Koloa Elementary School.  Principal Debbie Lindsey has graciously opened her school so that the administrators can do walk-throughs to observe various grade-levels standards-based instruction.

Principals mtg:   Kauai Complex Area principals mtg will be held on Thursday, Oct. 28th at the Kauai Complex Area Office from 8:00 a.m.   I will be leaving for Oahu later that morning to testify to the Federal Office of Special Education monitoring team from around mid-day until 5:00 p.m. addressing the state-wide status of SPED.  This is one of my IOUs that I assured the Superintendent that I would assist per the Feds monitoring of programs, co-teaching, fiscal, etc.

State Board of Education Mtg:    Kapaa High School will be hosting the next State Board of Education mtg Thursday, Nov. 4th, 2010 in the cafeteria from 3:00 p.m.  Please note that teachers should expect BOE members to be visiting our campus and classrooms that day.  Please share with our students as the Board members may be speaking with them both within and outside the classrooms.

Kapaa High Academic Counselors will present information on course options, graduation requirements, honors and advanced placement courses and the registration process for the 2011-12 school year. This meeting offers parents the opportunity to have question answered or get personal assistance from the academic counselors
According to Mrs. Robyn Keawe, Kapaa High Counselor, Kapaa High School and the DOE are constantly evolving and improving. There are changes, new opportunities and developments each year. We hope Kapaa High parents and guardians attend this registration night to benefit from all the most recent information and take advantage of assistance we are offering for successful course registration for the 2011-12 school year.
Kapaa High students will have already received their registration forms through their first period teacher on November 12th, 2010. Due date for registration forms will be specified on the registration form.
There will be a separate meeting for incoming freshmen for SY 2011-12 dates TBA. Letters regarding freshman year course registration will be distributed to all incoming freshmen currently enrolled in middle schools in the East Kauai school complex.

Interact Club: Kauai United Way Walkathon

First Quarter Status Reports Distributed

1st period teachers distributed first quarter status reports to students today. First period classes that had a substitute teacher may be affected in the form of a delayed distribution.

Mailihuna Rd. lane closure, Oct. 20- Nov. 12, 2010.

Effective Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 thru Nov. 12, 2010, Jennings Pacific Construction will be doing water line projects to existing residential homes across our school. This will result in Mailihuna Road becoming a one-lane only from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. daily. Students and staff who use the lower parking lot may be faced with traffic congestion when leaving the school grounds.

Student mediators to share positive communication skills with freshman Warriors

The next thing coming up for Peer Mediation is mediators will be going into Mrs. Sanchez and Ms. Linnemann's classrooms to conduct presentations for the freshmen on Fri. October 29.  We will be talking about conflict resolution and positive communication skills.

Weekly Principal's Address 10-18-2010

Please extend my kudos to the students for their overall positive spirit, participation, and hard work during homecoming week.  Want to also thank the many staff individuals that came together in making this past week a very successful one....certainly shows the strength and power when we all come together for that common purpose...our students!

Donation:   Kapaa High is again fortunate to receive it's second donation within a few days.  State Farm Insurance has donated $750 to help support the school.   Funds will support the Science Dept for as you are aware, the new proposed Board of Education policy 4540 will call for specific science courses that students will need for their graduation (starting with Class of 2018  -  25 credits) requirements.  

Hawaii State On-line Assessment  (HSA):   Reminder that the HSA will be from October 18, 2010 - May 20,  2011.  Plans are to administer the Mathematics assessment over the next two weeks this month followed by English in later November and early December.    Reminder that this new process allows teachers to get immediate feedback as to their students' progress and allows for re-teaching.   I will be discussing the format of the HSA at Wednesday's faculty mtg as it involves other content areas..... so it is critical that each Dept is ensuring that are addressing the HCPS III.  

Classroom visitations:  Administration will be doing classroom visitations/observations throughout this week.

East & Central Administrators' mtg:   I will be attending the East & Central Complex mtg on Monday Oct.18th from 7:00 - 9:00 a.m.

Weekly Principal's Address 10-14-2010

Classroom observations:   Over the next few weeks, administration will be doing classroom observations.   To ensure clarity and minimize disruption, appreciate if those standards/benchmarks being covered can be listed on your boards.  Looking forward to also having follow-up discussions as well.

Literacy for Learning/Data for School Improvement:   Kelly Bailey, Janis Gowen, Catherine Paleka, Beth Pemberton and myself will be attending the Kauai Complex Area training on Thursday, Oct. 14th addressing using data aligned with Literacy for Learning strategies.  Session will be from 8:30  - 2:30 p.m. @Kauai District Office.

Donation:   Kapaa High received a $2,000 donation from Kukui'ula Development Company to support our students per their  "Senior Projects".   Want to acknowledge both Brent E. Harrington, Kukui'ula President and Gini Kapali (former Kapaa High graduate), Community Relations Manager for their support.  Special kudos to Doris Morioka - Fulks for her perseverance in putting together the proposal.

Aloha Parents and Guardians of Kapaa High School,

It is with deep appreciation, excitement and humility that I take on the responsibility as Kapaa High School's principal.  It's truly special to return home and work with terrific students, staff, and community.  As a proud 1970 graduate of Kapaa High and a member of this community, I feel a great sense of responsibility to ensure that our students receive a quality education that prepares them for college and/or careers.

Kudos to Gilmore Youn for his 40 years of dedicated service to Kapaa High School, and the Department of Education.  As a teacher and administrator, Mr. Youn efforts have had true impact on our island community and beyond.  He will be missed and we wish Mr. Youn the very best in his retirement!

The adage that it takes a village to raise a child holds even more true today. The education of our students will require the partnership efforts of our island community.

Be assured that the leadership and staff of Kapaa High School is committed to this vision and will lead that charge in making this happen. Feel free to contact me as collectively we can accomplish more and greater things for our students when we work together.  

Finally, the measure of success in any organization begins with leadership and its people. I believe that the faculty at Kapaa High is comprised of individuals who believe we will make that positive difference for our students!  As a leader, I hold myself accountable and assure you that as an organization we are accountable.

Last Call for Parent Project Fall Session

Parent Project - the fall session of Parent Project at Kapaa High is still accepting adult and teen participants.
There is no tuition cost for this valuable training. A nominal material fee applies.
Any newcomers please:
1- Please contact Bridget Arume to let her know you are joining. She can be reached at 821-6972 x116.
2- Please arrive a half an hour early to get the rapid review session covering content of the first two weeks of material.


Here are some words from a fellow Warrior Parent about her experience so far:
"I highly recommend the Parent Project   workshop for parents and teens.  I’ve only attended two classes but I can already tell that the information is very helpful in improving relations with my teenage daughter. 
The facilitator Bridget, a mom of two grown daughters is energetic, knows the material well and has "been there”.  She does a great job of delivering the curriculum in an interesting and engaging way and facilitates the sharing between parents, which is also very valuable.  
The information presented thus far helps to remind me of how I can best respond to my teenager to improve our relationship and help her make healthy choices.
Whether you have troubled teens, strong-willed teens and/or easy going teens, the investment of a few hours a week is well worth it to ensure that you are doing everything you can to support them through the teen years.
The parent project has information we all need to be better parents.  Plus the teens attend their own empowerment workshop at the same time to help them be more responsible, accountable, and fulfilled in their life.  I hope more parents will see the benefit of learning this information and join the program."

Due to increased interest and economic stresses in our community, the tuition for this session is on a sliding scale and can be waived. SAT Test Taking Strategies

Fall SAT Testing is upon us. Here are some SAT test taking strategies from College Connections:

• Work at an even, steady pace, but keep moving.
• Most of the questions in each section range from easy to hard.
• Keep track of time during the test.
• Know which questions are best for you.
• Skip questions that you can't answer without spending a long time figuring it out.
• Answer the easy questions first.
• Remember that all questions are worth the same point value.
• Eliminate your choices.
• Make an educated guess.
• Watch the time you spend on any one question.
• Use your test booklet as scratch paper, and mark questions to back to.
• Check your answer sheet regularly to make sure you're answering the right question.
• Keep you answer sheet neat.
• Think positively.
• Stay focused.
• Concentrate on your own progress.
• Keep the test in perspective.
• Remember...you're in control.

Kapa’a High Announces Principal Youn’s Retirement; Welcomes Mr. Hamada

At the recent parent information fair and Warrior barbeque, Vice Principal Todd Harrison announced the retirement of esteemed Principal Youn, effective September 30, 2010.  He then introduced Daniel Hamada as Youn’s successor.

Mr. Youn began his career in the DOE as a teacher in January 1971; he served in that capacity for 16 years before ascending to the rank of Vice Principal.  After 11 years of service as a V.P., he continued in his leadership role as Kapaa High’s principal for 13 years.

When asked if he had any parting thoughts or words of wisdom to impart of the students and faculty of Kapaa High, Mr Youn replied, “I think Kapaa High has risen to be the number one school on Kauai. We need to be the number one school in the state. We have an opportunity to do that by welcoming our new principal Daniel Hamada. He has the expertise to take us to the next level. Everyone needs to work harder in order to reach this next benchmark. Instruction in the classroom is one of the most crucial factors in reaching that goal. Another factor is, students need to be focused on their education starting from freshman year.”

During his retirement, Mr Youn plans to spend more time in the ocean and enjoying the things he put aside while working. To sum things up, he said that he really just wants to “kick back and cruise” when he retires.

Kapaa High Wins Share in 10M Smaller Learning Communities Grant

Kapaa High School and the other four consortium schools (Castle HS, Maui HS, McKinley HS, and Roosevelt HS) won the award for the 2010 Smaller Learning Community Grant. This means the consortium has 10 million dollars to implement the strategies and professional development to prepare your students for college and careers in the 21st Century.

e-Waste Recycling Opportunity

From The Garden Island

"LIHU‘E — There is still time for schools, nonprofits, government agencies and small businesses to register for free electronics recycling through the University of Hawai‘i’s Education and Government eWaste Disposal Days program, a press release states.

The event is at Kaua‘i Community College in Puhi Oct. 27 to 29. A public drop-off is Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with no pre-registration requirement.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Electronic waste contributes 70 percent of the toxins found in U.S. landfills (lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.), while only contributing 2 percent of the volume of materials in landfills.”"

PSAT Sign-Ups Begin Mon Sept. 13. FCFS.

This test is offered once a year and is open to Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors. Juniors, we recommend that those of you thinking of attending a four year college take it as preparation for your first SAT given in the spring.

SIGN-UPS
Beginning Monday, September 13, 2010
There is no registration form, and parent signature not required.
Student simply needs to come to the Counselor's Office, A-22 during recess or lunchtime to sign-up.
Fee: $14 payment required for sign-up.
Cash or Checks for exact amount due payable to Kapaa High School accepted. Parents making payment for multiple teens, amount should exactly reflect amount due 2x14, 3x14, etc. Change can not be made.
Write your teen's name and "PSAT" on the check memo.
Seating is limited, so it is on a first come first served.
Registrants will be given their PSAT prep booklet/study guide.

Our understanding is that we have to have video/image release for any student, or really anyone, that appears in a picture. It just gets complicated. So, because the focus of the blog is information to support parent involvement, we are going to have to let the yearbook and Tradewind staffers have all the photo-op fun! I know, the blog being all text is pretty monotonous...maybe The Tradewind reporters will start blogging!

Fri Sept 10 is Reg Deadline for Oct SAT Test

The SAT is offered several times a year. Most students take the SAT a couple times, the first time during the spring of their junior year and a second time during the fall of their senior year. If your Senior still needs to take the SAT or needs to take it again, this October test, and more specifically, this registration deadline is not to be missed.  Click Here to Register Online.

Mid-Quarter Progress Reports Going Home

Confirmed via email last night: Progress Reports were distributed to all 1st Period teachers yesterday.Your teen should have it and be able to give it to you.
Please remember, these are PROGRESS reports.

Here's some recommended reading on the 3 types of report cards for parents/guardians and students who are new to Hawaii Public Schools.

*Teacher absences might impact distribution. If your child says s/he did not get a progress report today, you may contact your teen's first period teacher. Suggestion: email works really well. Students' teachers names are listed on their timetable.

Mentors Needed For Senior Projects

Every Senior needs to secure a Senior Project Mentor. The time commitment for mentorship is 15 hours.

Required Labs: Students In Credit Recovery

New this year, students doing online credit recovery must do at least one, 1-hour after school lab session every week. Students should see their counselor to sign up and obtain the official registration form.
The official registration form must be completed, signed by parent/guardian, and returned to the counselor to be kept on file. All lab sessions are held in P160- the first portable on the left past the mauka end of Building A.

Mid-Quarter Progress Reports Going Home

Heads Up: Mr. Barcial, the registrar, will be working on the mid-quarter progress reports for all students starting Wednesday evening. If all goes as well, teachers should have them and distribute them Friday morning 1st period.

PSAT Test Information Forthcoming

There was an omission in the August 20th edition of Principals Forum. We headlined PSAT and SAT Test Registration Deadlines- and only gave you the info on the SAT registration. SORRY! Details on the October 16th PSAT , and the instructions for registration are being finalized and will be out shortly. Information about the PSAT is online, but  PSAT registration will be done the old fashioned way- paper form. Stay tuned. Mahalo for your patience.

Senior Project Alert

Based on the Senior Project Master Calendar, The 3rd milestone for Senior Projects passed last Thursday which reads:
"August 26 Forms DUE: liability, video release, mentor commitment"


The 1st milestone was:
"August 9-13 Distributions and overview of senior project packet"
Seniors got their Senior Packet from their Language Arts teacher during class.

The 2nd milestone was:
"August 19 Topic DUE"

The 18 milestones are the due dates for all the required pieces of Senior Project from the 2nd week of August thru May 5th, 2011.
There are actually 17 due dates on the Master Calendar, but Monday April 18th has been added to the milestones on the online calendar. This is the day seniors get their Portfolios BACK from their teachers so that they can bring them to their oral presentation on April 20th. All students have to turn in their portfolio binder at the end of their oral presentation.

INTERACT CLUB

KEY CLUB

CAFETERIA PURCHASES

The cafeteria will not be accepting verbal numbers. You need to have your ID present to purchase meals. Please check with the Front Office or a cashier about your balance. If you have no money, your meal will have to be returned. If not, you will be reported to our police officer for theft.

PICTURE IDs

Students without an Student ID card may purchase a replacement for $5.00 at the Front Office during recess. New students and students who have not yet taken a picture during your freshman year here, may report to the Front Office on Wednesdays during morning recess. All students will be given a temporary meal pass until your ID card is ready.

BUS PASSES

Bus passes are ready for pick up at the Front Office. All applications received after August 12th will be issued a temporary until your bus pass is ready.

STUDENTS NEEDING CREDIT RECOVERY:

The Yearbook showcases the graduating class by using extra pages to have larger
photos and additional items such as a baby photo, message, etc.

senior showcase, we want you to look your best.

Parent Campus Orientation Tours Tuesday 9/14/2010

Back by Popular Demand.
A whole bunch of parents braved Freshman Orientation and took advantage of the parent campus orientation tour.(Yes, parents ARE welcome at Freshman Orientation, contrary to what you might remember, think or what your teen might have said to thwart you.)
Everyone really enjoyed it, so we're offering it again as an early bird option before the Back-to-School Parent Information Fair.
This is a casual insider’s tour, parent to parent. Your guide will introduce you to the campus, share relevant information and will do informal Q&A on the go. Afterwards, you can browse the fair and stay for dinner on the house! Handicap Accessible.
Date: Tuesday August 14th
Time: First tour 4 pm, second tour 4:45pm.
Place: Meet outside the Front Office.

Back-2-School Parent Information Fair & BBQ Tues Sept 14, 5-7:30pm @ Cafeteria (Grades 9,10,11,12)

First of all - ALL Parents are welcome as this is THE PTSA Annual BBQ, but just to be clear, some of the information available this night is geared especially for you- to help you help your teen navigate their 9th, 10th and 11th grade years.

We will meet in the cafeteria where the different interests and organizations will have information booths where you can browse and gather information at your own pace for as long as you want- whatever suits you. Just stop by for a quick look- see what’s new OR get your questions answered, network and share info with fellow parents, and stay for dinner. Robert Perdue, this year’s PTSA President, along with his officers and other volunteers, returns as grill master for the annual BBQ dinner. It will run from 5pm to 7pm so you can swing by on your way home, or come after dinner if you prefer. Come browse, find out what’s going on, or find answers to those stewing questions you have about  Kapaa High.

There will be information on academics, college and career planning, athletics, student clubs, help on how to stay informed and connect to your teens’ teachers/homework, info on PTSA, Project Grad and last but not least, an introduction/unveiling of the Smaller Learning Communities we are envisioning for the near future here at Kapaa High. We have just finished a grant application for $1.5 M that would go a long way towards this initiative.
We are moving forward with this whether we win the grant or not, and we would love to hear your input on how to  evolve and improve the quality of education at Kapaa High.  Tuesday Sept. 14, Cafeteria, 5 - 7:30 pm.

Fall Parent Nights Reinvented , Not To Be Missed. Mark Your Calendars!

About this time every year, we host several parent meetings, usually one night for each grade level. The fact is, this year there is so much information to share that we have to make some changes. And we think it’s a good thing. This year we will have two fall parent nights, one geared for parents/guardians of underclassmen, and a second one JUST for parents of seniors. The fact is, everyone’s time is valuable. We realize it’s a challenge to attend the many annual events that fill the back to school calendar, so this year we are combing efforts hosting our first parent information night jointly with the PTSA’s annual Back to school BBQ.

Students that do not have ID cards yet or still need to have their picture taken, please come to the Front Office during morning or lunch recess only. Replacement ID’s are $5.00. Temporary Green passes will be issued until your permanent ID is ready.

Please read, sign and give this entire packet back to your teen(s) so that s/he can return it to school.
Each student needs to bring this completed packet back to their 1st period teacher as soon as possible.

Nothing like calling your teen's teacher, just to find you've interrupted the class, and  they need to call you back.  Because timing is everything, it shows you the best time to call your teen's teacher or, if email is your preferred method of communication, it gives you 1-click access to the emails for everyone at Kapaa High.


More About the Kapaa High Directory
This directory has all the contact information for faculty and staff all in one place. It includes 
email address, phone extension, classroom/office locations and when Teachers have their prep period (in actual clock time) each day of the week.
Each teacher has at least one prep period every day. Faculty can be contacted and are available for conferences by appointment during their prep.
Please refrain from calling faculty during class time to avoid interrupting instructional time.

ABOUT THE KAUA’I PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (KPAC)*
The Kaua’i Performing Arts Center is a Department of Education learning center for public school students who are interested and talented in the performing arts. Credit courses are offered in Dance, Acting, Singing as well as the technical arts: Set Design, Stagecraft, Costuming, and Makeup. Class exercises in skills are combined with performance experiences. The KPAC staff is composed of professionals who are trained and experienced in the areas of dance, acting, singing, contemporary and classical theatre, music theatre, costuming, set design and construction, creative dramatics, and playwriting.

Performances usually take place at the Convention Hall and have included, in the past, such legendary
shows as The Music Man, West Side Story, Little Shop of Horrors, The Wiz, Grease, Bye Bye Birdie, and
Fiddler on the Roof. Interested individuals may obtain more information concerning the Center from Center Director Dennis McGraw at 822-4720.

Schedule Changes by grade level

Handling of Schedule Change by grade level.

Your teen will have received their 'timetable aka "course schedule" either at freshman/new student orientation on Monday, or Today.

Please be aware: The Counselors will meet with students requesting a schedule change* in order of grade level on these dates: 

       New students          August 2-3

       Seniors only             August 4-5-6

       Juniors only              August 9-10

       Sophomores only     August 11-12

       Freshmen only         August 13    * Last day for All Schedule Changes

* "schedule changes" refers to changes to their course schedule as shown on the timetable the received their first day of school.

The Campus is infused with energy and life as new and returning Warrior Students convene in a courtyard  to get their class schedules and begin their first day of 2010-11 school year.
